The Family Grows

I think Denece enjoyed the house in town more than any of us.  She could walk to school and to all the activities she wanted.  She had lots of friends and we enjoyed the days and evenings when she and her friends would come home for a party or a quick lunch.  We let her go to Pocatello, Idaho, to spend some time with her cousin, Veah Jean Van Orden.  Here she met a swell fellow named Edwin Lamar Perkins.  He brought her home on a Sunday in a green convertible.  She said to me, "How do you like my convertible boy?"  We all had a good laugh but she was embarrassed... Later she married this fellow in the Logan Temple on 16 May 1952.  She has two lovely children at the present time, a girl they call Edwinna Louise and a boy they call Delbert Lamar.  The only thing, they are living in Seattle, Washington, and we don't see them as often as we would like.

When Doyle and Joyce's marriage was about to take place, we bought a lovely new home from Newell Call in Bancroft and went there to live.  Doyle and Joyce made their home on the ranch.  We all went to Logan with them and left father Argyle to tend Alene and to do the dishes.  When we got home we were saddened to hear that our hired man had had to take father Argyle to the hospital.  He had suffered a stroke.  The following 25 September, 1950 he passed away.  He was a grand person and we still find ourselves missing all the nice things he did for us.

A Second Date

On Edwin and Denece’s second date, in 1950, they went to the Idaho Department Store in Pocatello with Bobby Holmberg who was looking for silverware.  They ended up buying a set as well.  It was William Rodgers silverware.  S & W Green stamps (which were given out for purchases at grocery stores, gas stations, and all kinds of stores) were used as a down payment.  They were silver plated and eventually they were given to Bobby Holmberg and his wife.  Grandma Dora never said a word but had a strange look on her face when they came home and told her they had bought silverware on their date.

While Edwin was in the air force, he would send money home for Denece to pay off the silverware with.

Working

Edwin left for college the September after meeting Denece Argyle, and his roommate and him both worked for the May Company (a big Dept. Store there in Los Angeles.) They lived in a rooming house for college students.  At the Department Store, they would go to the cafeteria on the first floor and then eat lunch out on the sun deck on the roof.

No School!

One night Denece and some of her friends spent one night moving a haystack in the road so that the school bus could not come.  They did not have to go to school that day, but her parents made them spend all night putting the haystack back.

At the Drive-In

Edwin went to the drive-in in the Buick that had a rumble seat.  So they put two people and closed it up and let them out to watch the movie when they got to the drive-in

Denece remembers her friends would lift out the back seat of the car and hide two people under it to go to the movies.

Left Behind

This next story from Denece happened on the day of Joseph Hyrum Argyle’s  funeral (their grandfather).  After the funeral Dora and Delbert were in the family car and Denece and Alene got left behind.  They were standing on a corner near the school.  Uncle Leonard saw them, picked them up, and drove them down to Bountiful, Utah for the burial.

Mom (Denece Ann Argyle) and Dad (Edwin Perkins) met in July or August in Pocatello.  Mom was staying with the Van Orden’s (2^nd Cousins) Veah and Jolene.  Dad drove a green 1949 Ford convertible.  He would meet up with his friends at the Alameda City Hall every evening.  Veah bet Mom $5.00 that Mom could not get a ride in that car.  It took her a week, but Mom won the bet. One Sunday morning, the girls were getting ready for church.  Veah had loaned a blouse to her friend JoAnn Bybee and Mom went to get it.  Dad went to pick up Dale Bybee and give him a ride to Priesthood.  They met there at the Bybee house.  Mom said she needed a ride home and Dad volunteered to take her home.  She told Veah that she was going to marry Edwin.

Slick Roads

One time, Denece went with her High School Band to a regional festival in Pocatello.  She had been chosen to play an oboe solo.  She did not know her folks came to hear the concert.  On the bus ride home, some kids told her that her parents had been in a terrible car accident and thought her mother had been killed.  She said that that was the longest bus ride of her life.  Her parents had been in an accident.  There was freezing rain and then snow.  Her mother had a bad cut on her arm.  The road was so slick that the bus driver had asked the kids to get off the bus and help hold the bus on the road as it went around the corner.
