Edwin also worked for National Laundry when he was still in
high school. His job was to clean out
the washers, wash down the floor, and starch the railroad workers' uniforms. When he was cleaning out the washers he would
find surgical tools from the hospital. He
would clean out the drain when he was done and would usually find fifty cents
or as much as two dollars. That would be
his spending money.
